Evidence of experience of the organisation of the women’s employment issues and experience in international co-operation

In 1989, the Casc Antic Neighbourhood Association created the School for Adult Students, for the needs of the inhabitants in the town (illiteracy, high rate of unemployment, high number of inhabitants with risk of social exclusion, high level of immigrants). In 1992, the Fundación Casc Antic, whose main mission is to fight against social exclusion and marginalisation, began to administratively manage it. Since then, the School for Adult Students has received small subventions from the Catalan administration. The organisation also provides these open services: various meetings, legal advice (general and specialised for immigrants), fighting for suitable housing. Of great importance are activities, which the organisation has started to recently manage, for women with a high risk of exclusion in order to improve their social and labour situation. Participation in the project and dissemination of the project outcomes will help to improve the quality of these services. Approximately 200 clients per one week can use the services of the whole centre. Users are local neighbours, especially women who are unemployed or have an unsuitable work situation, immigrants (especially from Africa), and any neighbour wishing to perform any activity in our center.

To ensure the quality of the services provided, the organisation works in close collaboration with the Municipality of Barcelona, NGOs working in the social sphere, organisations of volunteers, the University of Barcelona, Adult Schools, and other local institutions.

The organisation has experience in the collaboration of transnational projects. Since 1998, we have been partners of the ARKS ("Adult Returners Keys Skills") project, subventioned by the Socrates programme. This project is co-ordinated by Scotland and has the following transnational partners: Scotland, Netherlands, Finland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Estonia, Slovakia, Lithuania and Hungary. In 1999 the EAFCA became a member of the International Federation of the Settlements and Neighbourhood houses (IFS).
