Type of organisation (legal status, main areas and type of activity)
Rijnstad is a private foundation, local welfare and training
organisation in Arnhem the Netherlands, founded by a merger in 1990.
Rijnstad’s work pays special attention to disadvantaged people and is
neighbourhood-based. The work is directed at the elimination of prejudice and
discrimination and the promotion of social justice; the richness of difference that
characterizes the meeting of human beings with each other is celebrated. The work aims at
the empowerment of the local community; that people should take greater control of more of
their lives and be full partners in the physical, social and economic regeneration of
their neighbourhoods. The work is a mixture of social delivery to meet immediate need and
social advocacy to deal with the causes of that need and based on the principles of
equality. Rijnstad carries out activities and services mainly in seven districts of the
city; the areas of greater need Malburgen, Presikhaaf, Geitenkamp, Arnhem-West,
Arnhem-Midden and Klarendal/Sint Marten. All the community centres in these districts are
run by Rijnstad. The range of activites is geared to the social problems found in the
district in question and is harmonised with the activities offered by other social
institutions. They include a number of municipal projects such as an Activity Centre for
women, several Family Intervention projects and a Municipal Activities Centre, helping
those in poverty. Youth and Immigrant work is also involved.
Size of organisation, in terms of the total number of personnel (use full-time
equivalents)
The number of workers has increased in recent years by more than 25% to approx. 250
staff members. Every week, approximately 1,400 volunteers are involved in the activities
and services of the neighborhood and youth centres.
Evidence of experience of the organisation of the women’s employment issues and
experience in international co-operation
Rijnstad has a significant amount of experience in the project field.
For example they are involved in the organisation of activities for women ( Activity
Centre for Women ) geared at encouraging women’s confidence and self-esteem and allowing
them greater opportunity, freedom and autonomy; empowering them in their everyday lives.
In terms of international cooperation Rijnstad has since 1997 been
joint partners with the Social Innovation Fund, Lithuania in the execution of the project
entitled “Community and Training Centre for Women” sponsored by the EC Phare Lien
programme.
